The year 1857 saw the divisions of the Civil War sweeping across the nation. The lines were being drawn for the bloodiest war our country would fight on it’s own soil. The year 1857 also saw a more peaceful mission start in a small farming community in Upstate New York. Men and women, desiring a local Baptist church in Newark Valley prayed, met and discussed the possibility. By October 10th, 1857, they had decided to go ahead and organize. Fourteen churches were invited to come and meet in Newark Valley on October 27th, 1857 at 10 o’clock in the morning. The morning of the organizational meeting dawned and about eight of the invited churches were in attendance. The following men and women presented themselves as charter members of the First Baptist Church of Newark Valley, New York:
Daniel Andrews, Charlotte Andrews, Jesse Andrews, Catherine Andrews, Jonathan Andrews, Betsey Andrews, Samuel Fairchild, Mercenia Westfall, Albert Newell, Ann Lawrence, Almer G. Newell, Sarah A. Newell, T. S. Councilman, Theda A. Newell, W. A. Hull, Mary G. Councilman, Ezra Simmons, Aravilla Platt, Joseph Simmons, Eunice B. Platt, Aby J. Simmons, Verona Platt, Margaret J. Hull, Minerva Robbins, Uretta Robbins, Harriet Hollister. After deliberations and remarks from various men, it was unanimously resolved that the above-named form an independent Baptist Church. The church then adopted the articles known as the New Hampshire Articles of Faith of the Baptist denomination. And so began the mission of the First Baptist Church in Newark Valley, New York.
